Master in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering

This is your master’s degree.
The Master’s in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering combines engineering with Earth sciences to address the challenges of construction, sustainability, and natural resource management.

It trains professionals capable of analysing, designing, and managing geotechnical and environmental solutions, integrating technological innovation with environmental responsibility.

In a world that demands sustainable practices, this master’s programme prepares you to work in large-scale engineering projects, energy, environment, and georesources, with an integrated perspective on the circular economy and sound technical, scientific, and ethical practices.

What does this master’s degree give you?

  • You prepare to lead technological innovation in the construction, extractive, energy, and environmental sectors, developing solutions for large-scale engineering projects.

  • You receive theoretical, practical, and experimental training, including fieldwork, laboratory work, and case studies, complemented by seminars with experts and applied research.

  • You can complete your thesis in a business environment, at leading institutions, or in national and international R&D centres.

  • You join a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment that combines engineering, innovation, and practical application in real-world contexts.

Duration:
2 years / 4 semesters
Credits:
120 ECTS

What areas can you work in?

  • Geotechnics applied to large civil engineering works and infrastructure;

  • Environmental engineering and geoenvironmental risk mitigation;

  • Prospection, research, exploration, and sustainable management of mineral, energy, and water georesources;

  • Development and application of geotechnologies and technical software for geosciences and the geoenvironment;

  • Planning, design, management, coordination, and supervision of engineering works and projects;

  • Research and innovation in geomechanics, coastal, port, and mining geotechnics, and environmental sustainability.

  • “During my final year of the programme, I interned at an internationally renowned company, where the knowledge I acquired at ISEP - particularly in rock blasting engineering with explosives - was crucial to my successful performance during the internship. My time in the programme was also marked by the experience of a demanding yet collaborative faculty and their availability in supporting alumni, which directly enhances the quality of teaching, making it highly oriented toward real-world applications and future challenges.”

    Ana Mendes
  • “I highlight two key aspects of this ISEP programme that have been essential for performing my current role at BritaFiel SA. The first is the broad scope of the curriculum, which addresses the various challenges a geo-professional may encounter in daily practice. The second is the faculty’s professional experience, which brings real-world maturity into the classroom and encourages students to gain external experience through technical visits, fieldwork, and the development of projects or internships in companies or laboratories. It is a programme highly oriented toward the industrial, regional, and international realities of the extractive/mining, construction, energy, and environmental sectors.”

    Rui Santos Silva
  • “Being a geotechnical engineering professional is a constant challenge, as it not only tests our hard and soft skills daily but also involves dealing with the inherent adversities of nature. The Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering programme provided me with the necessary and appropriate tools for professional practice due to its range and curricular versatility.
    I believe that the foundation I gained at ISEP has been essential for carrying out my technical duties, both outdoors, in contact with nature, and in more bureaucratic, office-based tasks.”
